Beyond The Title

I could tell you about my qualifications and career path, but if you’re interested, you’ll find all of that on my LinkedIn profile. Instead, I’d like to share a little more about me—the person behind the psychological counsellor title.

Some experiences have shaped me tremendously, both as a person and as a professional. These moments have influenced how I see the world, how I connect with others, and why I chose this career path.

One of the most defining experiences of my life was the year I spent traveling and working in South Africa, South America, and Europe. Living away from home, meeting people from all walks of life, and immersing myself in new cultures shaped me in ways I never expected. It made one thing clear: I wanted a career where I worked with people, not just around them.

At 20, I faced an unimaginable loss—the tragic and untimely passing of my mother. Grief, trauma, and later PTSD forced me to navigate pain while the world kept turning. But through it, I learned how to sit with difficult emotions, grow from them, and support others walking a similar path.

My volunteer work over the years has given me perspective and gratitude. Giving back to people from all walks of life has taught me that small acts of care and connection truly matter. It’s something I hope to continue throughout my life—and inspire others to do the same.

Spending about seven years away from home taught me resilience, self-sufficiency, and the importance of asking for help when needed. It encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, form meaningful connections, and deeply appreciate different people and places.

Fun facts about me:
🌅 Sunset is my absolute favourite time of day—there’s something about the way the sky changes that always makes me pause. I also have a tattoo on the back of my arm that symbolises a sunset.
🌿 I have around 80 pot plants in my home and yard—I love being surrounded by green!
📚 I’m an introvert who appreciates deep connections, a good book, quiet time in the kitchen, and quality moments with loved ones.
🚪 I have a bad habit of not closing cupboard doors and lids properly (working on it!).
🎓 I’m passionate about lifelong learning, especially in my field.
🐱 I have two cats who bring me much joy.
🍰 About three years ago, I started "Svenja Creates", a little business where I make sell homemade goods. It really started with one or two people supporting me and quickly grew to weekly orders.
🏃‍♀️ I am training for a marathon, a goal I have had for the longest time!
